TO SAG OR NOT TO SAG

To SAG or not to SAG.
A question every over 50 Hollywood actress might ask herself when contemplating a little nip and tuck here and there but of course I'm not talking about sagging, I'm talking about SAG.-ing. Being part of The Screen Actors' Guild, that is.
I not over 50 but there will be a time shortly when I will have to make some decisions.
SAG Waiver: A SAG waiver is a necessary part of joining the Screen Actors Guild. An actor needs three waivers for membership. The waivers are provided when producers cannot meet specific requirements for hiring members and non members for background roles.
I apparently have two waivers. One for the project I am currently working on, AMC's Turn and one for Netflix's House of Cards, which I filmed back in July of 2013. All you need is three.
Now I say 'all you need is three' like it's as easy as that.
For me it presents several problems.
For one, joining SAG is expensive. For me, right now, it's expensive. The other challenge joining The Screen Actors' Guild would present for me is work. There are just enough non-union jobs to make a go at things but this is Richmond, Virginia and not New York City or L.A.
The question I will have to ask is will I be able to support myself as a SAG actor living in Richmond because I can tell you right now, this guy isn't moving to the West Coast any time soon. For a project on a temporary basis? Of course! Permanently? Uh. No. I hate earthquakes. Charlton Heston and Ava Gardner ruined them for me.
So many questions and points to consider:
More non-union jobs than union jobs. Union/SAG pays considerably more though.
SAG status means the possibility of speaking or featured roles which mean more money and more exposure. Work less but for better money and status.
I can't say it wouldn't be nice to move up to next level.
Of course, I am putting the cart way before the horse here.
I only have two waivers. It is unlikely, not totally out of the realm of possible, but unlikely that I will score another waiver for working on Turn.
As I've said, every day is a learning experience and an adventure.
I would love to have a speaking role or a featured reoccurring role.
I would love to be part of a television show.
I would love to be a film, or at this stage, be offered the chance to audition for one.
I would love to work with these people I have been watching and admiring all these years.
Just keeping it reel, folks.
