BUSY BE BUSY ME
TO SAY the last few weeks have been interesting would be an understatement.
I have been auditioning for theater lately. Two musicals and one play to be exact. Mostly because I really miss theater and being on stage but also because as an actor I want as much experience as I can get. Diversity is a good thing and the theater community here in Richmond is just unbelievable.
I haven't heard back from any of those auditions yet. I won't be negative and say I didn't get any of the roles I auditioned for I will just say I don't know anything. The shows aren't until Fall and Winter, so, really, they have no excuses for driving me crazy like this. Arg! The wait! The anticipation! The possible rejection. Guess I can wait some more.
Three of my auditions resulted in callbacks. So that's a good thing. I must have been...at the very least...interesting, which really is an awful word in reference to auditions.
You never want to hear "Well. That was interesting."
Trust me.
It's not a good thing.
It's like wearing a new bathing suit out on the beach. If people say you look interesting, take the suit off, burn it and hope that somebody more interesting comes along to distract from you.
I don't know.
Whatever happens is supposed to happen right? RIGHT?
I'M ASKING YOU A QUESTION!
This is where you smile and say, "Absolutely."
Speaking of which...
There is a historic drama filming here in Richmond.
The show is civil-war era based.
I know you're googling it so I'll just wait a sec...
Got it?
Okay.
Anyway...
So I've been persistent, not annoying. Truthfully, you have to be in this business. Always be respectful and professional but there's nothing wrong with reminding a casting director you are available and want to work.
They get tons of submissions. Nothing wrong with saying 'I'm still here.'
So that's what I've been doing. I've been submitting for everything that I was appropriate for and reminding them I'm still here and want to work.
And they got back with me!
I know! Right?!
I went to Petersburg yesterday for my fitting, still not knowing who or what I will be playing. I was just excited to be asked. Work is good. I could have signed on to be playing the backend guy in a horse costume. It didn't matter. Work is good.
As it turned out, I was originally cast in a background role which would only work one day. After filling out my paperwork however, I was given another role. A better role and a role that would work much more than one day. Right now I now have nine scheduled work days and there are more to follow.
I'm thrilled.
As an added bonus, I get to keep my mustache and I've been asked to grow my sideburns out. Both of those things are firsts for me. So this is just brilliant all around. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity. I really am.
In addition to working on this television series, I also shoot a short film next week. The film is part of VCU's Summer Intensive/VCUARTS Cinema Film Department. I landed a lead role and will be working with future filmmakers. I was immediately taken with the script and look forward to working with the talented team.
This will be the first time this particular casting director has cast me something as well.
So, I guess the lesson here, is never give up.
I know. I know.
It sounds so cliché but it's the truth. Don't ever give up! Especially if you're talking about something you love to do. Don't ever give up.
There's going to be rejection and disappointment.
There are going to be long stretches of no work and frankly, you're going to feel as if you must have fallen off the edge of the world.
I know the world is round. It's just an expression.
All you can do is your best. Keep at it. Keep reading books or watching videos or taking workshops. Grow! Be the best you can be so that when the phone does ring or your email does beep or whatever it does, you'll be ready. Ready to do the very best you can and do the best work you are capable of doing. You only get one chance to make a first impression.
Reputation is everything.
Timing is important.
Talent is somewhere in the mix.
Crazy! No?
Just keeping it reel.
