Community?
com·mu·ni·ty
kəˈmyo͞onədē/ noun
- 2.a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. Many words are losing their true meaning though.Facebook has taken the word friend and turned it into something completely different. Yes. We all have friends on Facebook. Friends we went to high school with, friends we work with, and then there are those other people we've never met and wouldn't be able to pick out of a police line up who are our friends.Community is over-used. Maybe not over-used. Maybe the word should really be gated community, because, really, most of these self-called communities are so selective and snobby there should be a ten foot high fence around them and a guy at the front making sure you are somebody and have done something the residents approve of before you are afforded entry.Snobbery in the arts always surprises me. It's sad. It's disappointing.Working in the arts, no matter if what your craft, is daunting enough. You think your fellow artists would support you. You wouldn't think there would be petty jealousy or politics. You would hope those insecurities, which we all share, would be kept in check. It's not the truth though. And that's a shame. So many talk a big game. They talk about support but when push comes to shove, you strain your eyes to see in the dark just to see they're not there for you.I'm disappointed but not surprised.I just completed a run of a show which has become very personal to me.I'm so blessed to have had friends and family come see me tell this most amazing story.I have no words for those who blew it off and really, there's no other way to say that. All I can say to those people who talk that big game is, you missed something special.I'm not talking about me or my acting.I'm talking about a beautifully crafted story by a master storyteller and playwright. Lanford Wilson's A Poster Of The Cosmos may not be his most well-known work but it's an important work that is still relevant today. It's gut-wrenching and heart-breaking. It's an important story which needs to be told. I wish more people could have been a little more adventurous and given an hour of their lives to see it. I don't think they would have been disappointed.I'm proud of my work.I'm grateful to those who came to see the shows and for their kind words.I have nothing else to say to those other people.I'm not part of that community. They wouldn't hear me over that big wall they built around themselves.Just keeping it reel.Copyright 2016All Rights Reserved.
